A city with cultural aspirations

Slupsk wants to join the ranks of Poland's most cultural cities and become a place where all artists who cannot do so elsewhere will be able to realise their ideas.

Although there is still a long way to go to realise this idea, the city can already offer interesting proposals for all culture lovers. At every level, for young and old alike. For lovers of fine arts, Słupsk has a real treat - the world's largest collection of paintings by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz - Witkacy.

It is housed in the Museum of Central Pomerania (located in the picturesque Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes) and is constantly being expanded with new works by an artist who has never been to Slupsk. The Slupsk museum also houses a rich collection related to the Griffin dynasty that ruled over Pomerania for centuries, as well as the history, culture and material heritage of these lands. Music lovers know Slupsk above all from the Polish Piano Festival, which takes place here. Initiated by the eminent music critic Jerzy Waldorff, the event attracts the best pianists and sophisticated classical music lovers every year.

The celebrities performing during the festival are accompanied by the Slupsk symphony orchestra, the Polish Philharmonic Orchestra "Sinfonia Baltica". For those who appreciate the art of acting, Słupsk offers a visit to the professional Nowy Theatre - which plays a diverse repertoire from ancient tragedies to contemporary farces - and the amateur Rondo Theatre, which specialises in chamber theatre events.

Parents with children can see the enchanted world of marionettes in the "Rainbow" Puppet Theatre and at performances of the travelling puppet theatre "Władca Lalek". Those looking for art exhibitions will probably be satisfied by the offer of the Baltic Contemporary Art Gallery, while lovers of applied crafts will find something for themselves in the Amber Gallery.

Those in need of strong sensations should go to the Museum of Forensic Science in the Słupsk Police School. And if you need contact with nature and old customs of the inhabitants of the Pomeranian lands, you should go to the Slowinski Village Museum in Kluki near Slupsk. There is something for everyone in the Słupsk cultural centres.
